Kwabena Bonsu, Beremis Perez
What is P53 gene?
Mentors: Dr. Patricia Molina, Dr. Sarah Salm, Dr. Lauren Goodwyn
P53 is a tumor suppressor protein, which functions abnormally in most human cancer. Further investigation into the mechanism behind p53 function is very useful in developing more effective anticancer preventive measures. While in normal human cells p53 is broken down by the Ubiquitin protease system as soon as it is made, in damaged cells, p53 is stabilized, and activated by mechanism yet unknown.

Abram Botvinnik
Control System for Western Blotting Processor
Mentor: Allan Felix
This project is a research of Control system for Western blotting processor (WBP). The Western blotting process is widely used in biochemical and medical labs to detect presence of specific proteins. Moreover, these proteins can be seen by the color that they produce when proper reagents, in particular antibodies react with. This process makes it possible to find proteins in complex mixture, which would otherwise be a proverbial needle in haystack. (From: James Hainsworth Western Blotting Report, 2000)

Dorin Dican
Wireless Local Area Network Security
Mentor: C. S. Rani

This Honors Project has two parts: the first part answers question such as: what is wireless, how wireless works, and how does a basic WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) look like. The second part describes in detail the WLAN security. The project also contains tips on how to create strong passwords and presents the most common encryption algorithms.

Sanni Olanrewaju
Computerized Methods in the Analysis of Plane Trusses
Mentor: R. Niyazov
The goal of this project is to analyze the forces in a Bridge Truss. After performing this experiment and analyzing the data we will be able to:
  • Determine the stress and strain exerted in each individual member;
  • Get hands-on experience in using the methods of section and joints;
  • Test experimentally the conclusions regarding compressed and extended members of a truss.

Akinde Omotayo
The Medical Applications of Extracts of Marijuana-Cannaboids
Mentor: Q. Sanders
Over the years, research has been conducted on the medical applications of extracts of Cannabis sativa in all parts of the world. Although it is a controversial subject in the medical establishment, Cannabis is used for therapeutic applications by millions of people. In the USA eleven states have legalized the medical use of marijuana, despite the Supreme Court ruling that drug possession is unconstitutional.

Xiaoqian Pan
Reverse Engineering (Product Dissection) of a Toy Car
Mentor: Dr. Ardebili
The study of engineered objects can lead to important insights about design and the design process. Reverse engineering involves the methodic disassembly and re-assembly of a device, taking care to document, test, analyze, and report on the study of its function. The object for this project, the Jump Master Vehicle, is a toy car. It is composed of six major parts, which are top covers, solid bases, wheels, base weights, base covers, and spring. In the first step, I studied and disassembled the object into basic constituent components.

Maria Prifiti
Mi Vida
Mentor: Dr. Oneida Sanchez
"Mi Vida" is a short autobiography, with some details from my personal life, and the places which I lived at. The purpose of the project was to show that I was able to use the Spanish language and its components (such as grammar, tenses and expressions etc..) It was a great opportunity for me to use what I have learned from Spanish and at the same time it was a challenge because Spanish is my fifth language (Albanian, Greek, English, French and now Spanish).

Mei Lyn Tan
Explaining Thalassemia
Mentor: Dr. Sarah Salm
Thalassemia is one of the most common inherited genetic diseases. This disease is generally found among natives of Africa, Greece, Italy, Southeast Asia, Far East, Middle East and Southern China and in the last decade, North America.
  • Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder caused by mutated or missing genes.
  • DNA consist of segments called genes, which are found in the chromosomes.
  • Two of these genes are responsible for the production of hemoglobin which is found in the red blood cells.
  • Hemoglobin carries the Oxygen supply to the whole body and is essential for the body to function normally.
  • The result of a missing or mutated gene causes the lack or absence of normal hemoglobin production.
  • Due to this condition, the individual experiences varying degrees of anemia together with other illnesses that are associated with it.
